What is it?
Run, sun, and fun all in the same place! Next August a new and exciting event comes to the beach at South Shields, where the surf and turf combine to offer a unique running experience and party atmosphere for all ages and abilities.
There’s a range of events and activities for adventurous runners, fun-loving families and enthusiastic spectators, all in one fabulous, energetic summer beach gathering.
Events include an 8K run, starting and finishing on the beach, surfing up to the lush grass on the iconic Leas area, an exhilarating trail which soars above the waves below.
The short 2km version for beginners and younger runners will be as much fun and over before the tide turns!

Paula Radcliffe’s Families on Track is the hugely popular continuous relay for all ages and abilities. It’s short, it’s fun, it’s colourful and it’s for everyone!
There will be beach games and activities throughout the afternoon with music and entertainment from the Tidal Trails stage, as well as food and drink on offer to all those attending and participating.
It’s running, but not as you know it! A new and exciting run experience, perfect for the whole family to get involved. Bring your running shoes, family, beach gear and bundles of energy for this one-of-a-kind event!
Where is it?
The event will be held on the beautiful beach at South Shields in an enclosed site hosting all of the activities and entertainment. Car parking is close by and there are excellent public transport links including Metro and bus services.
The beach at South Shields is an incredibly popular seaside destination with stunning vistas and plentiful amenities. The leas have long been one of the most inspirational places to run with its incredible views, wide open landscape and foot-loving surface.
How to take part
You can come as an individual or as a family. The entrance fee includes any of the running events listed below, and incorporates a voucher redeemable with any of the event food and drink vendors.
The entry ticket also includes entrance to the Tidal Trails stage area, with access to all of the activities and entertainment included.
There will also be a race memento and goody bag for all those taking part in the 8km or 2km races.

SIGNING UP
- How much is it to enter?
- £35 per adult for the 8KM and Event Village Entry
- £15 per adult for the 2KM and Event Village Entry
- £8 per child (U16) for the 2KM and Event Village Entry
- £10 per adult for Event Village Entry only
- £5 per child (U16) Event Village Entry only
- What does the entry fee cover?
- Each event ticket covers entry into one race (8KM or 2KM), plus all other activities on offer, including Paula’s Families on Track, beach games, and access to all facilities and vendors on site.
- Event Village only tickets do not include entry to the running events
- Is there a closing date for entries?
- Midnight, Wednesday 13th August 2025, or when sold out.
- Can I enter on the day?
- You will be able to purchase entry tickets on the day to access the Event Village, but this does not permit entry to either the 8KM or 2KM races. All trail races must be entered by the closing date.
- Which event should I do?
- It depends on your experience and current levels of fitness. Choose an event that will challenge you but is ultimately achievable. The 8KM trail run is designed for experienced athletes and those who have progressed from Couch to 5K programs. The 2KM is designed for younger athletes and those looking for a more gentle run.
- Can my kids enter?
- The 8KM is for those aged 16 and up on the day of the race, and the 2KM is suitable for anyone aged 6 and up. Under 11s must be accompanied by an adult for the run. Families can also participate in Paula’s Families on Track together; all ages and abilities are welcome!
- Is there an upper age limit?
- No! All that we ask is that any participant unsure of their physical ability to take part should seek medical advice from a general practitioner prior to the event.
- I haven’t run a proper race before, can I still enter?
- Absolutely! You should ensure you are physically able to complete the event, it is advisable to try a few runs close to the distance you are looking to complete before the event. It’s not a race against the clock but a fun and safe way for you to find out how enjoyable running is and to hopefully start you running regularly.
- There is also the option to just come along and soak up the atmosphere! We’ll have lots of fun beach games and entertainment to enjoy, whether you wish to participate in some running or not!
PRE-RACE INFORMATION

- Once you have entered, we will send you your race pack in the post. Race information will also be available to download on the website prior to the event.

- Why haven’t I received my entry pack?
- Race information packs are being sent via second class post, if you entered before the advertised postal deadline and you have not received your pack by Wednesday 13th August please email us on info@eventsofthenorth.com
- What do I do if I lose my race number?
- If you realise prior to the event, let us know via email at info@eventsofthenorth.com, and we can arrange for another number for you that you will need to collect on the day. If you can’t find your number on the day, the event information cabin at the venue will check your entry and issue you with a new number.
- I need to collect my race number on the day, where do I collect it from?
- You must collect your race number form the Race Information Cabin at the venue at least 45 minutes before the start of your race.
- If I have been sent my race number, do I need to register on the day?
- No, but you will need to show your tickets/race number on the gate to gain access to the event site. Once you have entered the site, you will be given a wristband so you can access the site throughout the event.
- I can’t run the race now, can I have a refund?
- Your entry fee is invested in the cost of staging the event with the fees covering contractors, suppliers and administration costs. The entry fee is non-transferable and non-refundable, however there could be the possibility of deferring your entry to the following year on production of an official letter from your doctor or physio. The deadline for medical deferrals is 4 weeks prior to the race date. You can download a copy of the event terms and conditions which are available during registration here
- I’m injured and can’t run, what should I do?
- Oh no! We are sorry you are missing out on the event. Please contact info@eventsofthenorth.comto inform the event team of your withdrawal. DO NOT PASS YOUR RACE NUMBER ON TO ANYONE ELSE, it potentially puts them at a medical risk as we have no medical information or emergency contact details for them.
- We do accept medical deferrals if provided with evidence of your injury from a GP or Physio. The deadline for medical deferrals is 4 weeks prior to the event.
- If you still want to come along, that’s great! You’ll be able to soak up the atmosphere at the event and enjoy all the activities and entertainment on offer on the day.
- Can someone take my place?
- No. For health and safety reasons we need to ensure that the event organiser has all the details of the runners in case of a medical incident on the day. Giving your race number to someone else is strictly prohibited, and you will be removed from the race if caught. This is also against UK Athletics rules.
GETTING TO THE EVENT
- Will there be accessible car parking at the venue?
- Yes, there is a designated car park for all cars, located near the venue. This will be well-signposted on the day, and will have wheelchair accessible points. Please follow signs for Bents Recreation Ground, and marshals will direct you to park.
- How do I get to the start area from the car park?
- There will be signs directing you from the car park to the event site. You will need to present your tickets on the gate.Please listen for announcements over the speakers informing runners of when to assemble for the start of each race.
- I don’t drive, can I get to the venue by public transport?
- If you are coming from Newcastle or Gateshead, the Metro will be running to South Shields, and local bus links will be running regularly. Further information will be provided in the event guide.
- What time is the event on?
- The event site will be open from 12pm, and close at 6pm.
ON THE DAY
- What time do the races start?
- These are subject to change – please keep an eye on the website and event emails in the run up to event day.
- 2KM: 1:30pm
- 8KM: 2pm
- Families on Track: will run twice over the afternoon following the 8KM
- Roughly how long will it take to complete the course?
- It’s not a race, but we would expect the majority of runners to complete the
- 8KM: 1h 45 minutes
- 2KM: 30 minutes
- What happens if it rains?
- Don’t let it put you off! Some of the most successful events have happened in the rain. Our events will only be cancelled if there are severe weather conditions. Make sure you are suitably dressed for the event, and bring extra clothes to layer up once you have finished your run. The entirety of the event is outdoors, and although we are expecting warm August weather, the UK can be unpredictable, so check the forecast beforehand and make sure you come prepared. There is also an increased likelihood of wind at the coast, so bear this in mind.
- Does the course go on any public roads with traffic?
- No, both races start on the beach, and venture onto the Leas for some trail running. There are no public roads on the course.
- How will I know which way to go?
- There will be course signage and marshals at all key junctions to ensure you don’t get lost.
- How difficult will the course be?
- Take a look at the event information on the website, which has a map of the route and a course description including elevation profile. As the course is off-road and features sand and grass sections, it may be softer underfoot. The trail is very well-maintained, so normal trainers are suitable.
- Do I have to run the course?
- We advise participants to run/jog the majority of the course. However, there is no restriction at all if you would like to enter and walk.
- When will I get my running time?
- Your race will be chip timed. The timing chip will give you an accurate start and finish time, so there’s no rush to be first over the start line when the gun goes!
- Will there be any other activities available?
- Yes! There will be a range of fun beach games, photo opportunities, Paula’s Families on Track event and food and drink vendors to keep you entertained and happy all day!
- What refreshments will be available?
- Water stations on course
- On site there will be a selection of food and drink vendors, including Colmans Fish & Chips and many more. Participants are encouraged to try Colman’s Seafood Temple for locally sourced, fresh seafood!
- Our official partners, Everyone Active and Red Sky Foundation will also have stalls offering fun games and entertainment for participants.
- What facilities will be available?
- Toilets will be provided at the event site, but unfortunately we are unable to provide showers or changing facilities. Refreshments will also be available from food and drink vendors on site. There will also be a secure baggage area available for all participants. First aid will be available on site.
